What this code covers

Source · Editorial summary grounded in 3 cited references ↓

63076 adds each additional cervical interspace to an anterior discectomy reported with 63075. It is an add-on with no global of its own and is billed only with 63075 on the same claim by the same surgeon.

The same bundling rules carry over. If the added level gets an interbody fusion, it belongs on 22552 with the ACDF primary, not here. If it gets a disc arthroplasty, the arthroplasty codes cover the discectomy. 63076 fits only when the extra interspace is decompressed without fusion or arthroplasty.

One unit per additional interspace. A two-level standalone discectomy at C5-C6 and C6-C7 is 63075 plus one unit of 63076. Do not append modifier 51. If the primary is denied, this code goes with it, so appeals should address 63075 first. Payers look for interspace-by-interspace detail in the op note, including what was removed and which roots or cord segments were freed.

Work RVU vs. total RVU

The work RVU (3.94) is the surgeon's own effort — the figure physician pay and productivity targets are built on. The total RVU (6.5) adds practice overhead and malpractice, and is what drives the Medicare payment below.
